The Berkeley College Republicans broke no laws when they invited Milo Yiannopoulos to their campus, but they knew that they were engaging in an act of provocation by testing an overwhelmingly liberal community’s commitment to free speech. A small number of radicals took the bait and turned what might have been a peaceful protest into a destructive rampage against people, property and propriety. By the end of the night, neither side had done much to advance their respective causes. If anything, both groups were likely to have repulsed many more observers than they attracted.
