Stupid #racist comment will likely sink L.A. City Council candidate’s campaign

It’s pretty obvious that Joe Bray-Ali has no business holding public office.

The Los Angeles City Council candidate seeking to represent a heavily Latino district apologized Wednesday for comments he made about Mexicans in a YouTube video posted online.

Bray-Ali, who is challenging City Councilman Gil Cedillo for the Council District 1 seat, appeared in a video titled “Ask a Mexican — Mexican Doorbell” that’s posted to his YouTube page.

In the video, Bray-Ali holds his young daughter and speaks directly to the camera.

“Dear Mexican, I’d like to know why all my neighbors think that the doorbell is a car horn. They wake up my baby,” Bray-Ali says.

Below the 13-second video is text reading, “Why do some of my neighbors think that their car’s horn is a doorbell? The asians, whites, and other groups I live near don’t honk to tell their friends they have arrived. What is up with the mexicans?”

Cedillo’s team after Bray-Ali called on the council member to denounce a racist comment made during a heated campaign debate Monday night in Westlake.

Bray-Ali = Stupid bigot. He has no business in public office.

The runoff is May 16.

  1. I haven’t any issues with this, as is it is shaming a grp of people who DO think that blowing your car horn is the way to announce your there at folks homes.. This shamming was needed in San Jose were they FINALLY had to pass a city ordinance that said you can’t park your freakin cars all over your lawn and the same for areas were Mexicans park there business moving vans all over middle class neighborhoods and the area starts to look like Tijuana. Yes, some cultures here need to be aware that you don’t need to bring your culture with you. They came here to escape that kind of behavior. I hope he gets elected.. probably not in racist LA.

  2. from Gustavo Arellano, the journalist whose video that is:

“Wow, where to begin…how about fuck everyone involved?
Fuck Smith for not doing her research and realizing that Bray-Ali’s question was directed at me—that dramatically changes the dynamics of the story. Fuck Cedillo’s team for responding to a racial taunt by one of his supporters by sending reporters the question to turn the tables on Bray-Ali (Cedillo, for his part, denounced the nastiness, although one of his fans is now leaving anti-Indian comments on my clip). Fuck Cedillo’s supporters for not allowing Bray-Ali to ask a legitimate question about Mexicans to a column set up for that. Fuck any Cedillo supporters who think the very act of engaging with ¡Ask a Mexican! is racist—Gil sure didn’t think so when he was a member of the Latino Legislative Caucus in 2008 when they awarded me with a Latino Spirit Award for what they said was my “exceptional vision, creativity, and work ethic.”
