Gov. Jerry Brown, responding to a scathing audit of the University of California headquarters, withheld $50 million from the university in his revised budget plan Thursday, saying the money would be released only when UC makes progress in fixing the financial problems identified in the audit and meets other conditions set by his office.
Brown revealed his disappointment in UC President Janet Napolitano’s office in the pages of the latest version of his budget proposal for California’s 2017-18 fiscal year.
To collect the $50 million in state funds, UC would have to make progress by May 1, 2018, on the auditor’s recommendations and on cost-containment strategies.
