The San Francisco Chronicle got this one right:
The Republican Party can look no further than California for a cautionary tale about the long-term cost of “winning” by stirring resentment against Latinos.
In 1994, Gov. Pete Wilson was about 20 points behind when he went all-in with an embrace of Proposition 187, which proposed to cut off public services, including education and health care, for residents who lacked legal immigration status. “They keep coming,” the narrator intoned over grainy black-and-white footage of people running across the border in the infamous TV ad. “Enough is enough,” Wilson declared at the end.
Wilson was re-elected, defeating Democrat Kathleen Brown, but his party never recovered.
Republicans clearly haven’t learned that being racist jerks is not the way to win elections.
