Oakland and San Francisco have joined to take the fourth-highest ranking on a yearly list of the nation’s most rat-infested municipalities, according to data from Orkin.
The pest control company released this year’s list of America’s top 50 cities, based on commercial and residential treatments Sept. 15, 2016, to Sept. 15, 2017.
Chicago and New York placed No. 1 and 2 on the list, same as last year. Los Angeles and San Francisco-Oakland came in third and fourth, respectively, each rising one place from last year, while Washington, D.C. slipped from last year’s third-place finish to fifth this year.
Other California cities included were Sacramento-Stockton at No. 26, up six places from last year, and San Diego at No. 35, up 12 places.
The list’s release is pegged to fall’s arrival, which often brings a rise in rodent activity as animals seek sources of food, water, and shelter against seasonal shifts.
