Former U.S. National Security Adviser Michael Flynn pleaded guilty on Friday to lying to the FBI, in an escalation of an investigation into alleged ties to Russia that has cast a cloud over President Donald Trump’s administration.

Flynn, President Donald Trump’s former national security adviser, broke his silence regarding his involvement in the Russia investigation on Friday after pleading guilty in federal court to lying to the FBI.

Flynn offered his first statement since becoming the subject of an FBI investigation into Russia’s meddling in U.S. politics and potential connections it had with Trump’s close circle of advisers. On Friday, Flynn said he made the decision to cooperate with FBI special counsel Robert Mueller “in the best interest of my family and of our country.”

The FBI brought a single charge of lying to investigators about his discussions with a Russian ambassador to the U.S. last December in regards to Obama-era sanctions just after Trump won the presidential election.

In February, Flynn resigned as Trump’s national security adviser in the wake of growing calls for his ouster from the White House days after a Washington Post report said he misled the administration about his contact with Russia’s ambassador to discuss U.S. sanctions prior to the inauguration.

The Washington Post reported on Feb. 9 that Flynn spoke privately with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak and that the two discussed sanctions former President Barack Obama imposed against Russia for interfering in the 2016 presidential election.

At the time, Flynn denied the accusation and reportedly misled Vice President Mike Pence about those conversations.

So basically Flynn is a liar and a greedy Washington opportunist. He lied to the President and to the American people. He deserves worse than he’s getting.
