The undocumented man acquitted of murder and manslaughter in the death of Kate Steinle will face additional charges in San Francisco federal court, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday.
A federal grand jury indicted Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, a 45-year-old Mexican national, on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and being an undocumented immigrant in possession of a firearm.
Last Thursday, a pathetic jury in San Francisco Superior Court found Garcia Zarate not guilty of murder, manslaughter and assault charges.
The federal charges, filed in the U.S. District Court of Northern California, stem from a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives investigation. Either charge carries a maximum 10-year sentence.
