The city of Fremont’s leaders hate President Trump so much that they have decided to teach him and Attorney General Jeff Sessions a lesson.
The city has decided not to turn over violent illegal immigrant criminals over to ICE.
Presumably these thugs are free to stroll around the city at their leisure.
The East Bay Times reports that this prompted a letter from the U.S. Department of Justice warning that its sanctuary policies could violate a federal law that requires police to cooperate with immigration officials in rounding up undocumented immigrants.
The Jan. 24 letter by Bureau of Justice Assistance Director Jon Adler to Fremont Mayor Lily Mei says the Department of Justice “remains concerned that your jurisdiction’s laws, policies, or practices may violate section 1373” of the United States Code.
The department has said the city’s acceptance of a federal Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant for law enforcement in 2016 requires it to comply with the statute, which the city previously said it does.
Adler asked the city to submit documents that reflect its policies regarding cooperation with federal agencies, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE.
“Should you fail to respond in a timely and complete manner, the Department will subpoena these documents,” the letter says.
Fremont is one of 29 jurisdictions nationwide that received a similar letter in November raising concerns about sanctuary policies.
