President Trump told lawmakers they needed to get their act together on gun regulations if they wanted him to sign a bill.
Democrats and Republicans squabbled like children in an extraordinary White House session open to reporters. It was a perfect example of why things never get done in Washington, and why Trump is continuing to prove to be the leader the country needs.
The President is right, the nation needs a leader on gun safety, and legislation which will focus on age restrictions and mental health. There is nothing wrong with stronger background checks, assuming the police and FBI can get their acts together. So far their leadership on this issue has been non-existent and their epic failures, fatal.
The President was noncommittal when a couple of lawmakers called for a ban on assault weapons like the AR-15 semiautomatic rifle. That type of ban hasn’t done anything to stop the violence in neighboring Mexico where civilian ownership of military style rifles is banned by the Mexican Constitution.
Feckless Republican and Democratic lawmakers cowered at the thought the NRA would turn against them in the upcoming election. These are they types of leaders in Washington we don’t need — people who put themselves before the country.
It was clear by the end of the meeting that the President was the only serious leader willing to craft an effective compromise on this issue.
