Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski plead guilty to having sex with a minor in 1977, and fled the U.S. rather than serve a prison term. The Academy still thinks Polanski is a good guy.
Polanski’s sex crimes were particularly heinous. He was charged with rape, sodomy and furnishing drugs to a minor. He agreed to plead guilty to having unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl, and spent 42 days in jail for a psychiatric evaluation. When he realized he would probably be sentenced to prison, he fled the country and has never returned.
That didn’t stop the two-faced Academy from awarding him an Oscar for “The Pianist”.
This year the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will celebrate former Lakers star Kobe Bryant, who was charged with rape in 2003. In the Los Angeles Times report, his accuser was overwhelmed by lawyers and a brutal public relations campaign. She ultimately refused to testify against him.
Hollywood hasn’t changed. When rich guys commit rape, the Academy still says “no problem.”
