Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and leaders of the Los Angeles City Council were fully aware of a controversial program that pays veteran cops and firefighters their salaries and pensions simultaneously for up to five years.

It’s a scam, and they turned a blind-eye to it in order to curry favors with the powerful police and fire unions.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the Deferred Retirement Option Plan, or DROP, was approved by voters in 2001 with a promise that it would keep veteran officers on the job a few years longer with no additional cost to the city.

That promise was just a lie.

Over one thousand DROP participants had entered the program and then taken injury leaves at twice their usual pay — some of them staying out for years with bad backs and sore knees. City leaders knew all about this and let the feckless cops and firefighters steal with impunity from taxpayers.

They collected millions.

City leaders receive gigantic sums of campaign money from the Los Angeles police and firefighters unions.  They claim the money does not influence their decisions. What joke that is.
