Congress is helping #Equifax screw you even harder

Screenshot 2018-03-12 at 07.16.52.pngNearly 150 million people have been screwed by the data breach at Equifax.

So how has Congress responded?

According to the Los Angeles Times, a congressional hearing was held on a draft bill aimed at creating a national standard for breach notifications.

Sounds good right? Except it excludes horrible actors like feckless Equifax and other credit agencies from its requirements.

Even worse, the Times reports, it would exempt all banks and financial institutions, and would require notification by retailers and other businesses only if they believe there’s “a reasonable risk that the breach of data security has resulted in identity theft, fraud or economic loss” to consumers.

In a slap-down of states like California and New York, Congress even wants to preempt tougher state laws.

Seriously? WTF??? Voters need to remind Congress who the boss is during this year’s midterm elections. We know who isn’t — feckless Equifax.
