According to pundits at the San Francisco Chronicle, the rise of Republican John Cox to the No. 2 slot in recent polling for the gubernatorial race is sweet news for Democratic front-runner Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom.
It’s also fake news. Everyone knows the Cox numbers were due to a hefty chunk of change his campaign paid in media advertisements just prior to the poll. If Cox is going to spend $4 million a week on political advertising he might have a chance. However it’s a safe bet he won’t.
It’s true that Newsom would much rather have white Republican as his opponent in the general election rather than go against the wildly popular Antonio Villaraigosa or state Treasurer John Chiang.
Both have plenty of support and access to huge amounts of campaign dollars. So odds are pretty good Newsom is going to be forced to defend his own brand of white elite Bay Area racism if he wants to be California’s next governor.
