Wow! Mark Zuckerberg’s congresswoman says she plans to ask him about how Facebook was used to “damage our democracy” when he testifies at her congressional committee next week.
The Mercury News is reporting that Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Palo Alto, will be in the spotlight when her most famous constituent appears before the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
Eshoo says she hopes Zuckerberg’s testimony would focus not only on the specifics of the Cambridge Analytica scandal that has rocked the social media giant in recent weeks, but larger questions about how online platforms have shaped politics in the U.S.
“This really rises to a moral issue, because Facebook’s platform was weaponized to do damage to our democracy,” Eshoo said. “An American company, I believe, has a responsibility to America.”
This HAS to have the white elites in Silicon Valley freaking out. For decades they have been paying off politicians like Eshoo to leave them alone with their riches. It looks like those days may be numbered.
Recent news reports have revealed that Cambridge Analytica, a political data firm, improperly obtained the personal data of as many as 87 million Facebook users, which it used to develop political ads for President Trump and other candidates.
The Federal Trade Commission and other government agencies are investigating that data breach.
Facebook has also faced scrutiny over Russian operatives’ use of political ads and posts on the network to influence American voters, in an effort that U.S. officials say was designed to pit Americans against each other and potentially boost Trump’s candidacy.
“It’s one thing to use data so that I can have better shopping experiences,” Eshoo said, “but when our beliefs and our attitudes are manipulated for someone’s political campaign, that’s antithetical to what I believe in.”
What she means is if the Clinton campaign had figured this out and done it everything would have been fine. But since President Trump won…everything is not fine.
In the end, Eshoo claims she’s going to be tough on Zuckerberg. We doubt it. There will be a public chaming of Mark Zuckerberg, they Facebook will spread some cash around Capitol Hill. The whole incident will fade away.
