Firefighters in California are angry because they now have to obey the law like everybody else.
The Sacramento Bee reports that a new professional standards program at Cal Fire is giving the department a mechanism to hand down discipline in a consistent manner across the state for the first time in its history.
The first time in history? Seriously?
According to the Bee, the program is racking up pay reductions, suspensions and dismissals at a rate that rivals scandal-plagued 2014 — the year when an instructor at its fire academy murdered his mistress and brought intense scrutiny on the department.
It’s about time. The people getting hammered aren’t “heroes”, they’re losers who deserve what they get.
Naturally firefighters being disciplined are playing the victim card. They maintain the discipline is wasting the investment in employees that it took years training.
Not true. These poor performers should never have been hired in the first place. The cost of weeding them out will be significant, but worth it. The taxpayers, and citizens whose lives depend on competent, capable, sober firefighters, deserve no less.
