Capitol Public Radio reports that Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg is maneuvering to renew and increase a portion of the city’s sales tax.
The city’s Measure U sales tax was first passed by voters in 2012 and currently raises around $50 million a year to pay for police, fire, and parks, services that were impacted and lost during the recession.
The tax is set to expire next year.
The “parks services” is really just eyewash, Measure U was and still is a payoff to the city’s brutal police department by Sacramento’s white elite leaders. It will fund pay raises for the thug cops who have been terrorizing communities of color.
Feeling the heat from the police unions, Steinberg is asking his city council colleagues and voters to re-up it this November election.
Amazingly Steinberg is using the brutal police execution of Stephon Clark to justify the tax overhaul.
A dubious Barry Accius, founder of Voice of the Youth leadership program, says he’s waiting to see Steinberg’s plan for spending the money before he decides whether to support it.
Mr. Accius is smart for being suspect.
Steinberg said the other estimated $25 million from the increased Measure U tax could be allocated to neighborhood-based services, public safety and investments to get young people ready for the workforce.
Yes it “could” be. However it won’t. It will go to fund more police to crack down on the poor, the homeless, the mentally-ill and people of color.
